U.S. Preventive Medicine® Awards Inaugural Global
Prevention Prize
U.S. Preventive Medicine®, presented the Inaugural Global Prevention Prize to Dr. Valentin Fuster, director of Mount Sinai Heart. The Prize was presented by veteran television journalist, Charlie Rose, during the inaugural National Health Science Summit held on November 7, 2008 in New York City.
The Global Prevention Prize was created by U.S. Preventive Medicine® to recognize and honor an individual who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to prevention and its role in helping America and the world overcome paramount health care concerns. This award seeks to acknowledge prima ry, secondary, or tertiary prevention achievements that improve the quality and longevity of individuals and groups, as well as help advance a culture of prevention. The award was presented at the annual National Health Science
Summit, which is sponsored by U.S. Preventive Medicine® and organized by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Some of our most exciting initiatives involve community service on distant shores and in distant venues. Cardiovascular disease is an international health priority, and I am proud that Mount Sinai Heart is playing a leading role in tackling this epidemic.”

The annual National Health Science Summit serves as a critical forum for 250 world-leading scientists, top journalists, health policy experts and executives to discuss trends in drug discovery and innovation, health care policy and legislation, and explore the frontiers of science, the breakthrough therapies and the implications for global health. Additional awards were presented by notable guests, including former NBA star Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

About Dr. Valentin Fuster
Dr. Fuster is Director of Mount Sinai Heart, Director of the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute, and the Marie-Josee and Henry R. Kravis Center for Cardiovascular Health. He is also the Richard Gorlin, MD/Heart Research Foundation Professor at the Mount Sinai Medical Center and President of Science of the Centor Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovacalures Carlos III (CNIC) in Madrid. He is a past president of the American Heart Association and the World Heart Federation. Under Dr. Fuster's leadership, Mount Sinai Heart is shaping a new paradigm in cardiovascular care in which clinicians are focused on treating and preventing disease, and promoting optimal heart health around the world.
