Shift from Disease Management to Prevention: Better for Consumers, Better for the Bottom Line

U.S. Preventive Medicine recently acquired Specialty Disease Management and has incorporated the entity into USPM’s current product and service offerings: The Prevention Plan™, The Prevention Plan CM™, The Prevention Plan Plus™ and The Centers for Preventive Medicine®.

“Intending to go after the $1 trillion in expenditures targeting chronic disease, U.S. Preventive Medicine will become the platform by which we will consolidate the fragmented disease management industry,” said Christopher Fey, USPM chairman and CEO. “Through acquisitions we can migrate the current disease management approach to a more effective care management system. By applying prevention programs on the front end and chronic condition management on the back end - all with a high-touch 360 degree customer experience - we believe we will ultimately produce better outcomes at lower costs.”

SDM’s business model was proven in government and commercial markets, as it incorporated highly trained clinical staff working with patients and their physicians over the phone and in the community. Their programs included: patient and physician education; individualized care plans; clinical data gathering and analysis; and outcomes reporting. The company had been awarded numerous contracts throughout the nation and branded several technology products to improve effectiveness and provide a competitive distinction in a quickly growing industry. Prior to its acquisition, SDM provided services in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Nebraska, New York, and North Dakota.

According to Frederic Goldstein, SDM founder and current president and COO of USPM, “Our goal is to continue providing personalized, high-touch care management, with an increased emphasis on prevention and wellness. We plan to become a true national player as we expand throughout the country and expand the conditions we address.”
